In case you’ve been living under a rock this past year, coconut oil is in. It’s trending in cooking, cleaning, lifestyle and even beauty products now, thanks to its huge range of health benefits.

And the best thing is, if you’re trying to save cash, you can use it straight from the jar (yep, the same jar you use in your cooking) for a variety of purposes. Here are eight really cool beauty tricks with coconut oil…

1. Use it as a body butter

After the hop out of the shower, slather on some pure coconut oil. A little goes a long way, so one tablespoon should do the trick. Rub it in circular motions into your limbs for silky smooth, moisturised skin. As it’s cheap and all natural, it’s also great to recommend to clients with skin sensitivites and those on a budget.

2. Use it as an illuminator

If you ever find yourself stuck without makeup, simply swipe a small amount of coconut oil across your cheekbones and lips for a fresh all-day glow.

3. Use it as a shaving gel

Run out of shaving gel? Grab a tablespoon of coconut oil and slather it over the area you want to shave. It’s a great lubricant for your razor, and thanks to it’s rich, nourishing texture, it will moisturise your skin in the process, and leave you with an exotic coconut-y scent.

4. Use it as a cleanser

Did you know coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal? Yep, it sure is. So if you’re in a bind without cleanser one day, or simply wishing to cut back on chemicals in your skincare, simply rub it in circular motions all over your face before wiping away residue with a warm, damp cloth. It’s so effective it’ll even cut through makeup.

5. Use it as a massage oil

Coconut oil is soothing, moisturising and sweetly scented, so it’s a no-brainer alternative to your regular massage oil. Use it in your clinic or salon and your clients will thank you.

6. Use it as a hair masque

Want to treat your hair? Apply a twenty cent piece size dollop to damp, freshly washed hair, and then comb through to the tips before tying into a loose bun and covering with a shower cap. Leave for as little as 10 minutes to overnight before shampooing out for nourished, shiny, strong hair.

7. Use it as a body scrub

Add a few tablespoons of course brown sugar to half a cup of melted coconut oil for a seriously deliciously scented exfoliating skin treat.

8. Use it as a cuticle oil

Treat your clients cuticles with a half teaspoon of coconut oil. It’s a cheaper, healthier alternative to regular cuticle creams and oils and will leave your clients digits extra soft and sweet smelling.

  1. Great article! It’s amazing how many things in our pantry can just as good job for our skin as those expensive creams! My grandmother always told me about the benefits of honey for silky skin – I tried and it works brilliantly!

  2. It’s also ideal for cleaning and lubricating new piercings. I had my nose pierced in India (without sterile studs and whatnot) and was told to just use coconut oil on it til it healed. It worked a treat, and I had absolutely no problems with the piercing.
