Raw earthiness at Ginger & Smart

Ginger & Smart started proceedings this morning at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. The look was beautifully grounded and of the earth.

Going off the fact that Ginger & Smart’s latest collection is inspired by images of the earth, the makeup was bound to follow suit. “There are also these strong graphic lines that give an earthly movement, which we’ve created with today’s eye look that has a crescent shape representing those images,” says Carol Mackie, senior makeup artist for M.A.C and makeup director for the show. ”

Skin was prepped with M.A.C Careblend Oils and Strobe Cream to give it that glowing health, then perfected with the makeup brand’s new lightweight foundation, Studio Waterweight Foundation – “which is super light and super hydrating – so it looks like it isn’t there but it perfects the skin,” says Mackie.

Skin was then given earthly tones with M.A.C’s Worldly Wealth Mineralise Skin Finish. Gently does it though because soft highlighting was all that was needed – “We’re giving skin a nice earth tone,” says Mackie. “Just making the skin glow, so the feature is on the line on the eye.”

Eyes went all of-the-earth with M.A.C’s much-loved Chromacake in Basic Red, Marine Ultra, Primary Yellow, while lips were conditioned with M.A.C Lip Conditioner then “nuded out” with soon-to-be-released M.A.C Quit’trix Stick – “a shadowy contour [which we also used to] contour.

Brows were “soft and a little bit fluffy” says Mackie who lightly defined with M.A.C’s new Big Brow Pencil and the must-have Clear Set “to brush those brows up”.

“The designers wanted the makeup to be raw and minimal with a cool vibe,” says Mackie.

If skin was firmly earth bound, nails took inspiration from the atmosphere.

“The nail look is all about clear skies,” says nail director, Karon McKendrick Taylor, who used FABY Nail Lacquer for the show. “The collection is inspired by looking down from space on to earth, so we’re doing clear skies; clean, clear, crisp nails. [On the finger nails] is a high gloss clean nail, called This is My Style; it’s just a nice, sheer nude. On the toes, we have Dessert Rose, which is more opaque coverage but along the same lines of neutral-looking nails.”
