Oozing confidence at Di$count Universe

Rebel brand, Di$count Universe, is not afraid to push the boundaries – and when it came to the makeup by M.A.C, things were definitely on the bleeding edge.

If you’re keen to see makeup that strays far, far away from the nude, barely-there makeup trend, then Discount Universe is for you. With nothing uniform and some of the looks created to shock, the makeup for this show was totally “bonkers” says Nicole Thompson, senior artist for M.A.C and lead artist for this MBFWA 2017 show.

“The Di$count Universe show is all about gloss, gloss, gloss, colour, colour, colour,” says Thompson. “There’s a lot of shiny things in the collection – so gloss was the main thread that goes through all of the bonkers looks.”

Every look started with raw skin to “make sure it had a cool factor,” says Thompson. The aim was not to see too much foundation (M.A.C Studio Waterweight Foundation). Skin was prepped to give complexions a beautiful glow (despite the bonkers element) due to  M.A.C Prep+ Prime Fix+, M.A.C Softening Lotion and
M.A.C Care Blend Oil. Skin was then matted down with M.A.C Prep + Prime Finishing Powder.

Bright, bright colour was, of course, key.

“There’s a bright royal blue going through the collection so we’re doing eyes oozing blue tears,” says Thompson, who says the look is akin to what goes on in the cartoons.

To get the look, the M.A.C team used “acrylic paints, mixing two colours – High Definition Cyan and Marine Ultra – together” and then applied with a “tiny brush and wobbly hand”.

The bloody mouths were the key look for the show.

“Most of the girls have the blood mouth,” says Thompson. “It’s basically an oozing blow-up doll blood lip.

Lips were overdrawn and cartoon-like using M.A.C’s Cherry Lip Pencil, Crimson Lip Mix and Clear Lip Glass.

“Then we have a bunch of half faces and different multi-coloured looks,” says Thompson. “We’ve got black eyes with Feline Pencil and Carbon Eyeshadow finished in Lip Glass. It’s just about these sharp, bold looks with blurred edges.”

Nails were equally daring. Lead nail artist, Skye McIntyre for CND Creative Nail Design, created punk themed talons that had plenty of edge.

“We’ve got tips with different colours in glitter ranging from black, blue, pink, silver and red,” says Skye McIntyre. “It is a punk theme and we’ve used CND Creative Play in Su-Pearl-Ative, Black + Forth, Got A Light?, Flirting with Fire, and Viral Violet to get the look for the show.”
