Sephora’s Virtual Artist lets you find your perfect lipstick without ever trying it on

Sephora's Virtual Artist app lets you digitally choose and try on over 1,000 shades of lip colour

Spending hours browsing the shelves of Sephora is a dream for any makeup artist – literally. The near never-ending cycle of demos, weddings and photo shoots leave you with barely any time clean your brushes, let alone restock your lip kit.

Sephora’s Virtual Artist app, however, is one step ahead. Partnering with augmented reality company ModiFace, Virtual Artist contains an extensive database of brands, cosmetics and colours that are stocked in-store.

Like a virtual mirror, this interactive interface uses facial recognition to match products to the individual’s facial features while giving them the option to digitally try on over 1,000 shades of lip colour. All you need to do is upload a photo of yourself and let Virtual Artist do the rest.

Available through their Facebook Messenger platform and free app, Sephora’s Virtual Artist uses Pantone Colour IQ to help customers select different hues, finishes and formulas. Featured brands include Guerlain, Yves Saint Laurent, NARS, Becca, Kat Von D, Burberry, Clinique and more.

Once you’ve perfected your pout, you can instantly buy your new shade or save and share your favourite looks for later. Lip colour is just the beginning, though. Facebook and Sephora are currently in collaboration to extend the Virtual Artist database beyond just lipstick to include blush, eyeshadow and more.
