The students, Kate MacDonald (Ultimo College) and Kara Moores (Sutherland), were selected through interviews and their suitability as TAFE ambassadors. The students arrived at the Hotel Capital in Kuala Lumpur on May 15 and were treated to an orientation tour and culture welcome dinner the next day.
The students attended shows and workshops at the International Hair and Beauty Expo at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, paid visits to the Enya School of Beauty and Kimarie Hair and Beauty Academy, and discovered the local salon scene.
Returning home with new knowledge and a unique taste of the Asian beauty industry, the students both felt inspired being exposed to new techniques and skills. “We learned that Malaysian beauty professionals are usually trained in makeup, hair and costume design. This has inspired me to add hair to my skill-set,” said Kate MacDonald.
“The purpose of this trip was to provide an international experience of skills and knowledge for hair and beauty students. The focus was on global trends and techniques that differ to what we have in Australia. The tour incorporated workshops for skill development and a shared learning experience with Enya School of Beauty,” said Gail Watt, head teacher of beauty therapy at Sydney TAFE Ultimo College.
