When most of us refer to makeup as a weapon, we don’t mean it literally. But perhaps we should.

A new report by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) points to cosmetic products as the cause of a third of all injuries reported to them in the past year.

“Few other consumer products are directly applied to our bodies in the way cosmetics are. This means that people who make and supply cosmetic products need to be fully aware of their responsibilities,” said ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard.

In a push to reduce the shocking number of beauty related injuries, including bacterial infections and allergic reactions, the ACCC plans to crack down on cosmetic products that don’t currently have ingredient labelling, which is essential for ensuring consumers are able to make informed purchases.

Rickard also recommended cosmetic companies themselves looked at reviewing their manufacturing processes to ensure ingredients are formulated and packaged safely.

“Investing in good quality assurance processes means you can be confident that the products you sell are safe and fit for purpose,” explained Rickard.

Until then, the ACCC is advising cosmetic companies to be extremely wary about making claims on product packaging that can not be substantiated.

“Companies should not claim products are of a particular quality or standard when they are not.”

Have your say: Are you surprised by these findings? Have you, or a client ever reacted badly to a product?
