Call for Entries: Film & Fantasy Makeup Awards

Entries are now open for the Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo’s ‘Face 2 Face ’ makeup awards’ new category Film & Fantasy. This year, the competition takes a new direction with makeup and body artist Becca Gilmartin on board as the new coordinator. This exciting new category will be guest judged by Adam Johansen and will enable makeup artists to truly showcase their talent and skill.

The new exciting category is Film & Fantasy Special Effects with the theme being The Oscars! This category incorporates movie makeup and special effects, and there are plenty of amazing films to draw inspiration from. Why not recreate your favourite sci-fi movie character and pay homage to some of the greatest makeup artists that have worked in the film industry? The interpretation of this category will be up to each individual and it will be the perfect forum for makeup artists to show skills to industry professionals.

The expo is thrilled to have Adam Johansen as a guest judge for this category! He is a world class special effects makeup artist with an amazing body of work which includes some of the biggest films and TV shows in the business, including Star Wars, The Matrix, The Great Gatsby, Wolverine, Superman Returns, Ghost Rider, Babe Pig in the City, Where the Wild Things Are, Australia, Farscape, Red Planet, Queen of the Damned and many more. He is one of two directors at Odd Studios, a team of artists and technicians specialising in prosthetic makeup, creature effects, animatronic characters, special effects, props and models.

Becca Gilmartin had 5 minutes with Adam to pick his brain about special effects and the 2012 Makeup Awards…

What advice would you give aspiring makeup artists looking to get into the special effects?
"You need to be continually producing your own work, honing your skills and developing a folio to show prospective employers. Whenever someone comes to our studio to show us their work, someone who has just left school or finished a course, I’m always hoping they have gone above and beyond what the course/school has asked of them. The ones who need to create are the ones who stand out. I’m not too worried about their quality at that stage; I’m more interested in their drive and dedication to creating work.”

What advice do you have for entrants in the special effects category?
"Have fun and create something that inspires you. Use this opportunity to bring to life something you like, not something you think the judges will like."

If there was a machine that made robot special effects makeup artists and you had full control – what features would you include as standard for these robots?
"Commitment, politeness, respect, passion, drive and a healthy obsession with film characters!"
