Sculptra is a long-lasting, clinically-proven treatment designed to smooth deep wrinkles, minimise fine lines and restore facial volume. The injectable contains micro particles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) which are injected into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. The acid is biocompatible and biodegradable and is not derived from animals, so no skin testing is required prior to treatment.
The volumising treatment stimulates the production of the body’s own collagen helping to reduce lines and wrinkles and achieve a fuller, younger-looking face. The volumiser thickens skin and restores facial volume, correcting depressions in the cheeks, temples and areas around the mouth and eyes and small facial folds and wrinkles. It provides facial rejuvenation and addresses the visible signs of ageing which include loss of volume, dermal thinking and bone resorption.
The non-surgical cosmetic treatment is performed by specially trained medical professionals such as physicians, dermatologists, plastic and cosmetic surgeons and registered nurses. Sculptra is only available from sanofi-aventis; a pharmaceutical world leader and all healthcare professionals purchasing Sculptra must achieve accreditation from sanofi-aventis prior to treating patients with the product. It is an injectable S4 medical device licensed in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) since 2002.
The gradual approach of Sculptra allows for ongoing improvement and results last as long as three years. Immediate results can often be noticed due to initial swelling at the site of injection and water used to dilute the formula, however if this does occur it subsides in a few days. Real long-lasting results take around six weeks to become noticeable. Results vary according to the individual however and the desired outcome however generally a person will require two to four treatments at six-week intervals over a period of 12 months.
