So you’ve created a newsletter, or an eDM system, and have finally managed to send it out to all of your customers. And it’s great. But – and here’s the kicker – no matter how awesome your mail-out is, some people just won’t wasn’t it landing in their inbox. And as easy – and tempting – as it can be to ignore repeated “please unsubscribe me” emails and messages, not removing recipients from your email list can now land you in hot water.
As of this month, the federal government has updated the Spam Regulations 2021 (Cth) under the Spam Act 2003 (Cth), mandating that organisations sending commercial electronic messages must make it straightforward for customers to ‘unsubscribe’.
The aim of the amendments is to provide greater clarity and certainty for consumers, companies and regulatory compliance advisers alike.
The amendments are in response to mounting frustration from growing numbers of consumers who have taken exception to the processes many businesses put in place that were making unsubscribing a difficult process.
If a customer requests ti be unsubscribed from an email list, salon owners are not permitted to request any additional information from the customer. They are also not permitted to demand the customer set up an account from which to unsubscribe, provide any reason or details.
