Kirstie McDermott discusses the importance of feeling valued this Employee Appreciation Day.
Feeling unloved and a bit neglected at work? Employee Appreciation Day falls on March 3rd, and is a day dedicated to recognising and celebrating the contributions and hard work of employees in the workplace––aka, you.
Its origins lie in the U.S. in the early 1990s, where it was created by a group of human resources professionals as a way to recognise the hard work and dedication of employees. These days, Employee Appreciation Day has spread internationally and is celebrated across Europe, and in Australia too.
It’s timely, because according to Indeed/YouGov’s 2022 Workplace Happiness Survey, 72% of employed Australians felt unhappy at work over the past year. And a recent Microsoft Work Trend Index discovered that Australian workers are suffering high levels of work-related burnout.
The report showed that 62% of Australian workers reported being burned out at work, a big jump up from the global average of 48% of employees. Microsoft also identified a worrying workplace trend known as “productivity paranoia”, whereby managers are distrustful of the work which remote or hybrid employees are doing––despite evidence to the contrary.
“Productivity paranoia risks making hybrid work unsustainable. Leaders need to pivot from worrying about whether their people are working enough to helping them focus on the work that’s most important,” Microsoft stated in the report.
Nice to be recognised
Whether you work in retail, a salon or in an administrative beauty role, it is nice to be recognised and have your contribution positively acknowledged, and Employee Appreciation Day is all about your manager or employer expressing your value.
Some employers might offer bonuses or gifts, others might organise events or activities to show their gratitude. Some other ways your employer might celebrate Employee Appreciation Day include:
- Providing a catered lunch or breakfast for employees
- Organising team-building activities or games, or hosting a happy hour or work social
- Giving out personalised thank-you notes or cards
- Offering flexible work hours or time off on the day or week
- Providing small gifts such as company-branded merchandise, gift cards, or flowers.
Will your employer step up this March 3rd and tell you how important you are to business success? If that’s a hard no, then it could be time to look for a new job where management acknowledges how lucky they are to have you.
