According to Dr Angelo Tsirbas, the number one trend in aesthetic eyelid surgery worldwide is sculpting using the patient’s own fat.
Oculoplastic surgeon Dr Angelo Tsirbas recently returned from presenting at the European Society of Opthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery meeting in Barcelona, Spain. From the meeting, it was evident that a worldwide-trend of harvesting fat and injecting it back into the face is prominent. This is a more natural and cost-effective alternative to cosmetic fillers.
“Fat is being harvested and injected into the face instead of fillers,” he said. “The benefit for patients is that we can use up to 70ml of their own fat for sculpting and filling an amount that could cost up to $30,000 if using manufactured dermal fillers instead.”
The fat is harvested from the patient’s abdomen via liposuction and then sterilised and processed for reinjection into the targeted area on the face.
Dr Tsirbas is known for his specialised work in eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. “The techniques I’ve been employing for the last 10 years are now becoming more mainstream globally, especially in the USA,” said Dr Tsirbas.
“Blepharoplasty is not necessarily about cutting skin out. It is about restoring the youthful contours of the face – a restoration process, not an excision. We like to preserve, augment and sculpt,” he added.
“In the past, people didn’t know the difference, now people are asking after doing their research: how are you going to reposition the fat?”
Dr Angelo Tsirbas is a member of the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, a group for qualified specialists in Australia who focus solely on facial cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
