LED phototherapy is attracting a lot of attention and who better to explain the technology than Dr Glen Calderhead, vice president, scientific affairs at the Lutronic Corporation.
A leading expert in this field he will visit selected capital cities in November to present a series of workshops where he will speak about the advanced techniques now being applied with the company’s latest LED phototherapy system, the Healite 11.
The system is available with three different wavelengths: 830 nm, 633nm and 415 nm. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or adjunctive to a wide variety of treatments. The comprehensive presentations will cover all the basic photobiology of light, some tissue and cell biology, LED/tissue interaction and specific clinical indications for all three wavelengths.
The terminology, ‘low level laser therapy’ or LLLT, was first coined by Dr Calderhead and while it is still the preferred acronym, it now stands for low level light therapy, encompassing all light sources used in phototherapy. His interest in LEDs as a valid therapeutic light source followed the development in the late 1990’s by the ‘NASA LED’ that had higher output powers than existing LEDs, a much narrower band and offered laser-like target selectivity. He was the first to champion the introduction of near-infrared 830 nm wavelength in addition to refining therapeutic approaches with existing wavelengths.
Dr Calderhead is an internationally recognised authority on all aspects of phototherapy. Based in South Korea, he travels extensively lecturing on all aspects of phototherapy and photosurgery at national and international congresses and has delivered over 300 keynote and invited lectures over the past 30 years. He has also published a number of scientific papers and is the co-author of and contributor to several books on laser therapy, laser surgery and simulation surgery.
