Plastic surgeons, phlebologists, cosmetic surgeons and beauty educators gathered on the 15th of November at Sydney Skin and Cancer Foundation for a workshop on laser and light.
The workshop was conducted by US clinical trainer Barb Powers R. N. who has over a decade of experience in the use of multiple laser systems and modalities – as well as combination procedures using toxins and fillers.
Barb worked with vascular surgeons and was one of the founding trainers for Cutera Lasers in 2002. She now works as a full-time Cutera trainer training dermatologists, plastic surgeons and vascular surgeons.
As a full-time trainer for Cutera, Barb represents a company who also shares her vision in laser education – Phil Schramm, Cutera national manager said “in order for practitioners to stay up-to-date with what is possible and maintain standards of safety and excellence – ongoing education is vital”.
As lasers become more common in the industry, education must also follow.
“Lasers are used for an increasing variety of procedures in the beauty industry – everything from hair removal, treating unsightly veins, rejuvenating skin to removing warts and toenail fungus,” said Phil.
The session on Friday covered a range of topics including:
Light physics – how physics plays an important role in safety
Light and tissue interaction – what to look for in the skin
Parameters for best patient outcomes – what is best for my client
Treating skin of colour – the darker the skin, the higher the risk
Combination therapies – when to choose the laser option
How to best avoid complications – steps to avoid unnecessary outcomes
On top of the Friday workshop, Cutera clients were also treated to a full day of training on Thursday 14th of November.
“This was an opportunity for our clients to further improve their practice by engaging with their peers, and having any questions answered,” Phil said.
