The majority of nail artists use the web for inspiration

It is important that nail technicians keep up-to-date with the latest fashions and trends and take inspiration from leaders in the industry. In the recent nail survey conducted by Professional Beauty, we asked our participants who they most admire in the nail industry and got a mixed response.

Of over 250 participants who completed the survey, 41 per cent said they got their nail inspiration for design and trends online including websites, newsletters and You Tube tutorials. Twenty four percent also read magazines including Professional Beauty to get inspiration. Surprisingly, only 11 per cent said they got their inspiration from the brands they use and stock, as well as other nail artists, and just nine per cent said they look to trade shows to get ideas. Even less nail artists source their inspiration from clients (six per cent), training (two per cent) and celebrity trends (two per cent).

There were contrasting answers in response to who they most admire in the industry. Those in the nail industry most admired by our survey participants are Jan Nordstrom-Arnold, co-founder and style director of CND, the creative team at OPI, Viv Simmonds founder of Vivid Nails, celebrity nail artists Tom Bachik and Leah Light, nail artist and educator Catherine Wong, Elmien Scholtz, founder of Bio Sculpture, and Greg Salo of Young Nails, respectively.

We caught up with our survey participants most admired nail artist Jan Arnold to see what she had to say about the industry, "Nail professionals are the most inspiring beauty professionals in the business. They are artistic, intelligent, creative and caring. They change the lives of their clients by empowering them with confidence and freedom. They inspire me every day with their passion!”
