US nail brand Orly has collaborated with MuslimGirl.com to create its first collection of nail polish specifically targeted at Muslim women.
The #HalalPaint collection features six water-permeable nail polishes made out of 100 percent halal ingredients.-
Some Muslim women avoid wearing traditional nail polish as it creates a barrier that prevents them from performing ‘wudu’ (the Muslim cleansing ritual prior to prayer during which water must touch all parts of the hands).
Announcing the launch, MuslimGirl said the website, which is the largest Muslim women’s site in the US, was excited to work with Orly to create the collection of “nail polishes made for Muslim women, by Muslim women”.
“The collaboration is the first of its kind, where a major American beauty brand has teamed up to release a collection catering specifically to us!
“[It] is a major way that we are making space for diversity in the beauty industry. There’s no reason why options shouldn’t be available for all women to practice beauty in the way that suits them and satisfies their needs.”
Named by MuslimGirl, the new nail polishes are called ‘Haram-Bae’, ‘Wallah Bro Wipe Out’, ‘What the Fatima?’, ‘Ig-Noor the Haters’ and ‘The Perfect Amani-cure’.
“Many of us are the girls who could never find our names on a keychain, so we wanted to make sure we provided that experience through this collection,” says MuslimGirl founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh.
MuslimGirl.com chief of staff Azmia Magane adds that the line is important “because there are so many girls and young women who aren’t represented by mainstream industries”.
“They see things about them that are designed without them instead of for them and by them. This is our way of bridging that gap.”
The #HalalPaint collection isn’t available in Australia but Muslim women can use Orly’s Breathable Treatment + Color polishes.
Launched in Australia last year, the Halal-certified polishes feature “Advanced Oxygen Technology which allows air and hydration to penetrate to the nail” as well as a blend of Argan Oil and vitamins B5 and C to aid in nail growth.
There are currently 18 colours plus a clear treatment available in Australia with another 18 colours due to be launched later this year.
