Ian Findlay is the newly appointed Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Wellness at Think Education Group. Ian has a comprehensive career in Biotechnology, Forensics, and IVF, and he possesses a refreshing and positively holistic view of health and wellbeing. Here he talks to Professional Beauty about his journey and why he was attracted to the Health and Wellbeing industry.

What attracted you to the Health and Wellbeing industry?

Health and wellness is at the very core of all of our lives, and like so many in the industry, is something I had a passion for from a young age. I started my career in IVF where I witnessed time and again what utter joy health could bring to a family. It’s the greatest gift you can give someone – life, confidence and self-validation.

Recently, I’ve moved to the education of the next generation of health and wellness practitioners. Whether they are studying beauty, natural therapies or counseling, students experience the satisfaction of helping their clients improve their personal health and wellness.

Another facet of the industry is that it’s growing so students studying health and wellness have great career prospects.

What is the beauty industry’s greatest challenge?

Big picture, the beauty industry still has to work to change the perception that it is just about hair, lips and nails, as it is far more in depth and complex than just outward appearance.

In addition, the industry has to manage the increasingly medical aspect of beauty (including injectables, mini-facelifts etc.) making sure these are used in a regulated and safe fashion. Think’s ANCB College aims to provide students with the qualifications and skills in the latest technology they need to be at the forefront of the beauty industry.

What was the bravest decision in your career?

Giving up work as a full time professor and head of my biotech company to spend quality time with my young son was the bravest decision I ever made, but it was also the easiest. You just never get that time back and your children are your legacy, the most precious time you have is the time spent with your family.

Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?

Beauty comes from inner health, wellbeing and a positive sense of self. If a person has all that, their beauty shines through. Learning how to balance life to be healthy and well is the key. All Think health and wellness colleges strive for excellence in all that they do, in industry, in classrooms and in treatment rooms to make people feel beautiful inside and out.
