Can Technology Determine Our Skin’s Radiance Levels? EveLab Insight Says Yes

There’s no universal skin goal as greatly in demand as that of a healthy, natural glow. The kind of glow only achievable with a supported skin barrier. A glow that is crafted using an arsenal of efficacious ingredients. And a glow that looks and feels all the more secured under the guidance of a qualified skin professional.

But beyond the knowledge we’ve grasped from research and that we accrue through seeing and touch, the proficiency of a trained therapist can only take us so far. The skin is complex and so too becomes our ability to accurately diagnose and treat its myriad of issues. The capabilities of skin diagnostic technologies are advancing at an increasingly rapid rate, providing a solution for skin professionals and their clients in need of further evidence.

For Nick Howard, Global Strategy Director at AI diagnostic device provider EveLab Insight, skin radiance is at the top of the company’s R&D wish list. Nick has played witness to the rise in client demand and so built technology that seeks to service this desire.

“Consumers’ desire for radiant, glowy, and bright skin is driven by the association of these qualities with health, youth, and vitality,” Nick tells Professional Beauty. “In many cultures, glowing skin is perceived as a sign of overall wellbeing and attractiveness.”

“A radiant complexion suggests that the skin is well-hydrated, properly nourished, and free from significant imperfections, which enhances one’s confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, the beauty industry and media often highlight these skin qualities as desirable, reinforcing the pursuit of such skin tones among consumers.”

“In many cultures, glowing skin is perceived as a sign of overall wellbeing and attractiveness.”

EveLab Insight has developed a series of devices designed to read the skin, draw assessments based on its current condition, and make future predictions on how the skin will likely take shape over time. This includes judgements around skin’s radiance. Its hero analysis devices are Eve V, Eve M, and Eve Key.

Tech talks

Nick says Eve V can record skin’s radiance levels by assessing 3D panoramic images. Three key areas are examined:

  1. Oiliness condition: “The device assesses the skin’s oil levels by analysing the reflective properties of the skin surface. Excessive oiliness can affect the overall glow and appearance of the skin.”
  2. Skin texture: “The device evaluates the smoothness and evenness of the skin’s surface. By detecting variations in skin texture, it can identify areas that may need exfoliation or other treatments to improve radiance.”
  3. Evenness of skin tone: “The device measures the uniformity of the skin tone by analysing pigmentation patterns. Uneven skin tone can detract from a radiant appearance, so identifying these areas allows for targeted treatments.”

The technology shares results using numerical scores to measure a clients’ results against a database of over 10 million images.

Skin professionals have a great degree of accessibility to the skin on a surface level, and can make adept assumptions about its condition using the naked eye. Nick flags four ways in which imaging can take therapist diagnosis to the next level:

  1. Detect subtle skin issues: “Advanced imaging can identify underlying skin issues like early signs of pigmentation, redness, and structural irregularities that are not visible to the naked eye.”
  2. Provide quantitative analysis: “Imaging offers measurable data on various skin parameters such as oiliness, texture, and tone, allowing for objective assessment and tracking over time.”
  3. Reveal deep-level concerns: ‘It can visualise deeper layers of the skin, uncovering issues such as collagen loss or deep pigmentation, which are critical for comprehensive skincare analysis and treatment planning.”
  4. Enhance precision in diagnosis and treatment: “By providing a detailed map of the skin’s condition, imaging technology enables precise and personalised skincare recommendations, improving the effectiveness of treatments.”

Using advanced diagnostic tools provides a clear pathway for skin professionals in selecting the most appropriate treatment options for their clients. Where a healthy, natural glow is the ultimate skin goal, investing in such tools will build further trust amongst clients and within therapists themselves.
