During August, the Australasian College Broadway, Australia’s leading private hair and beauty educational facility, challenged its students to a night of competition at the inaugural ‘Battle of the Classes’.
The concept saw students judged by an external panel of industry representatives on hair, makeup, costumes and the overall performance of their models on the catwalk stage. The prize for the winning class, the ticket sales from the night which totalled over $1,000, was donated to the student group’s charity of choice.
To compete in the Battle of the Classes, each of the 7 classes was challenged to come up with a specific theme to showcase. Each group was given a $100 budget and were instructed to find inspiration from fashion editorials, movies, and designers. The result was outstanding and students wowed their audience with unique looks and dance moves that oozed incredible talent.
Maureen Houssein-Mustafa OAM, Executive Chairman and Founder of Australasian College Broadway said the night was thoroughly enjoyed by all and congratulated the students on their ability to create imaginative and innovative looks.
“The Industry can look forward to some very talented individuals about to hit the market. Students performed routines wearing Lady Ga Ga inspired costumes, circus outfits with 1920’s inspired hair, freak shows, robot outfits and much more,” Ms. Houssein-Mustafa said.
“The aim of the night was to give our students something to compete for and to understand the importance of giving back to the community, which is something we impress greatly as part of our college culture. The opportunity to donate to a charity that was meaningful to the class was inspiring and helped keep students engaged with their eye on the prize. The winning class was able to donate funds to CanTeen, which offers support, information and resources to young people living with cancer.”
The Editor from Hair Industry Magazine Instyle, Cameron Pine joined the judging panel along with De Lorenzo Representative Deborah French, and Aveda Representative Yolande Castles. Each performing class was scored on individuality and best technique.
