Hair & Beauty Australia, a not-for-profit industry association, highlight some of the recent changes affecting the beauty industry and your business.
Fair Work
Fair work is currently putting unpaid work schemes under the microscope. To ensure you or your employer is being compliant employees need to be paid for all the hours they work. This includes employer directed meetings, training courses or sessions and time spent opening and closing the business. If an employee is required to come into the salon early to prepare for a shift, they need to be paid for this, even if it is ten minutes before a shift commences.
Compulsory Superannuation
To help grow the Australian worker’s savings for retirement, the government has ruled the compulsory superannuation guarantee rate will gradually increase from 9 to 12 per cent over the next seven years. On 1 July 2013, the super rate will change from 9 to 9.25 per cent.
Dad and Partner Pay
Certain dads and partners may now have access to Dad and Partner Pay when they have or adopt a child. This pay, similar to paid parental leave, is government funded. Employers will not be required to allocate payments as with parental leave; however employers will need to organise two weeks of unpaid leave with employees if they are eligible to access this form of leave.
