A new ingredient is available to beauty professionals and comes straight from food waste. Red Velvet Oil™, a collaboration between NATIVE EXTRACTS and KAGOME AUSTRALIA, transforms surplus tomato seed waste into a high-performance skincare ingredient packed with lycopene, phytosterols, and fatty acids.

Red Velvet Oil™ is a direct result of large-scale agricultural innovation. KAGOME AUSTRALIA, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest tomato processors, separates 5,000 tonnes of tomato seeds from its production streams to create the oil, diverting significant waste from landfills.
Brands that are working on NPD utilising Red Velvet Oil™ include: Mukti, Vitaman, Ocean Muse, Yaye, Diramu, and Ink Nurse.

The result is an oil rich in lycopene, a carotenoid that is twice as effective as beta-carotene in neutralising free radicals and protecting against UV damage, positioning it as an emerging contender for sunscreen formulations and barrier-supporting skincare. Unlike conventional oils, Red Velvet Oil™ is suitable for all skin types, including post-procedure, sensitive, and acne-prone skin, thanks to its high concentration of phytonutrients that enhance hydration, support skin repair and regulate sebum production.
Lisa Carroll, Founder and Managing Director of NATIVE EXTRACTS, explains that the oil is extracted using a cold-press method, which preserves its potency without using solvents. “This process minimises degradation and oxidation, ensuring the oil retains its powerful antioxidant benefits,” she shares.

The consumer demand for upcycled cosmetic ingredients is expected to grow significantly, with Asia Pacific leading global adoption. Carroll says, “Consumers expect brands to lead with responsible sourcing and a deeper connection to their supply chain.” She adds, “This oil allows beauty businesses to lead with transparency, traceability, and ethical ingredient sourcing.”
Red Velvet Oil™ is now available for brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. NATIVE EXTRACTS offers new product development (NPD) strategy sessions, formulation guides, and samples to support brands ready to be at the forefront of the circular beauty movement.
