Held at Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh, the event marks the awards’ 28th year and represents the highest industry accolades in the region. Honouring both creative and business talent, they are the longest running and most respected hair awards in the Southern Hemisphere.
After two full days scrutinising collections and entries, the 20-strong panel of independent judges selected only four finalists to compete for the top prize of Australian Hairdresser of the Year: Frank Apostolopoulos from Biba, VIC; Joey Scandizzo from Joey Scandizzo Salon, VIC; Emiliano Vitale from e Salon, NSW; Caterina DiBiase from Heading Out Hair & Beauty, VIC.

Australian Hairdresser of the Year is the most coveted of the awards at Hair Expo, representing the pinnacle of the Australian hairdressing industry. When judging this category, the decision is based on both the entrant’s photographic collection and an in depth submission that outlines factors such as their integrity, peer recognition, entrepreneurial success, education and contribution to the advancement of the industry.
Two new categories were introduced to the awards this year. The first of which, Emerging Hairdresser of the Year, provides a stepping stone between the current awards of New Creative Force and Australian/New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year. Young stars to watch, Ali Holmes from Wild Life SoGo, Scott Sloan from Sloans of Lane Cove, Jamie Furlan from Xiang Hair and Carl Keeley from Chumba Concept Salon made up the finalists.
Also introduced to the event this year was Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, specifically recognising the growing and specialised area of male hairdressing. Antony Wilson from Raven Haircutters, Jules Tognini from aka Togninis, Lucy Cardoza from Cast and Rob Mason from Biba were named finalists in this category.

Finalists in other categories include Sara Allsop and Jock Robson, both from Dharma, for New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year; two-time and reigning Colour Technician of the Year, Matt Clements, defending his title for 2013; and Wild Life Hair for Salon Team of the Year – providing them with their 50th finalist nomination since the awards began.
Now that the finalists have been named, winners across all categories in the 2013 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards will be announced at Hair Expo on Monday June 10. Unquestionably the hairdressing industry’s night of nights and the grand finale of the annual Hair Expo weekend, the gala event is the culmination of three days of unrivalled education and inspiration at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre starting Saturday June 9 2012.
