Space-age grunge and floaty, feminine florals collided in Shakuhachi’s “Cyber-Barbarella” at MBFWA. Nails by CND and makeup by MAC perfectly complemented the collection.
Inspired by nostalgic feminity and modern utility, this season’s muse is a brazen Barbarella living in a floral fairy tale. The runway saw exaggerated proportions and angular shapes juxtaposed with ready-to-wear sportswear pieces and dreamy prints. Highlight looks included a structured zip front tulip dress featuring strong utilitarian shoulders and a metallic leather, PU and mesh spliced column gown. Inspired by 1960’s shapes and silhouettes, bonded neoprene dresses contoured the body in a celebration of the female form.
The models’ nails were manicured to perfection and looked gorgeous on the runway in a sophisticated, light grey. Cherie Pollard, lead nail artist for CND said of the nails, “Here at Shakuhachi we have gone for one of CND’s newest innovation colours. The colour is called City Scape and it’s a very pale, muted grey with fleshy undertones. It has been chosen to complement the collection as there is quite a lot of bright, bold colour and geographic prints which we didn’t want to compete with and needed a colour that would match them all. We have gone for quite short, medium-length nails and taken off the sides to gently round them for a fun, sporty shape to match the silhouettes and complete the vision the designer has.”
MAC’s makeup worked in harmony with CND’s nails. Natasha Severino led the makeup team who created a shimmering silver eye shadow with crystals and described the collection as “Raver Chic.”
“There’s a lot of metallic in the collection and Grimes was a big influence and inspiration so we wanted something a bit playful and reflective; skin’s really luminous and dewy and the eyes with the pigments, glitter and crystal… It’s a really fun makeup to do,” said Natasha. “The products used are Strobe, MAC Face & Body, Cream Colour Base in Pearl and Lunar then on the eyes we’ve got the Reflex Pearl and the Pigment in the Pearl, as well, then the crystals…The eyelashes are just lightly, curled and powdered, no mascara or anything on the lips – just a balm. It is a really pretty and feminine makeup and very glam.”
