Want a deeper understanding of skin science? Skincare expert, Terri Vinson, has just released The Essential Skincare Guide: Understanding Active Cosmeceuticals, a must-have ebook for skincare professionals on everything cosmeceutical. We talk to Vinson about what we can expect from the book.
How do you feel about the launch of The Essential Skincare Guide?
“I am so excited to release this publication to the market. I believe in cutting through the hype and bringing the science to skin professionals and consumers so they can make informed choices about their skincare,” says Terri Vinson
What can people expect from the book?
“The E-book is a compilation of my most popular publishes articles on skin care and clinical treatments,” says Vinson. “It is not brand-based and explains advanced skin care concepts in layperson’s terms. There is something for everyone in this book and it is a great reference guide for both consumers and skin professionals.”
How important is it for professionals to understand active ingredients?
“It is essential for skin professionals to be able to pass on accurate information to their clients about the key ingredients and benefits of cosmeceuticals,” says Vinson. “The ingredients an individual applies on a daily basis has a huge bearing on the overall health and physical appearance of the skin.”
Skin sensitivity is one of the topics in your book. Do you think this issue is on the rise?
“Yes, I believe that an increase in the level of synthetic fragrance and other common skin irritants in health and beauty products is a concern,” says Vinson. “[Also], the rise of environmental pollutants and even ingesting processed foods contribute significantly to skin sensitivity more than ever before.”
You talk about skincare myths in the book. Are there a lot out there?
“There is a lot is misconception and hype in the beauty industry,” agrees Vinson. “Inflated over-the-counter pricing is a reflection of advertising and packaging rather than what is actually in the bottle. Many of the myths are a result of false evidence and misleading marketing and it is up to the scientists to deliver the facts rather than the fable.”
When finding the right cosmeceutical for your clients, is it a matter of trial and error? Or is there a way to get it right first time?
“I do not believe in trial and error,” says Vinson. “It is important to note that the skin is a highly complex organ and some ingredients may not be suitable for the individual for various reasons. However, education will always create the best platform for prescribing the ideal regimen.”
How does a professional do this?
“It is always important that the therapist conduct a detailed evaluation of the client’s skin before recommending the skincare regimen to best suit their needs,” says Vinson. “This way, you are more likely to tailor the best product combination to the needs of your client.
What ingredients do you recommend professionals educate their clients on?
“There are a number of ingredients that will be suitable to almost all skin types, including retinol, niacinamide, vitamin C and zinc oxide, and others that will be highly specific to individual skin concerns including ageing, acne, hyperpigmentation and sensitivity,” says Vinson. “It is possible to get it right the first time with the correct skin diagnosis, suitable cosmeceuticals and an ideal treatment plan.”
Who should buy your book?
“All those who are interested in improving the health and appearance of their skin,” says Vinson. “If you are interested in drilling down further into the science of good skin and ingredient technology then this book is for you.”
And purchasing will also help a great cause…
“All proceeds of my book sales will go to The Luke Batty Foundation so recipients of the book will also be helping reduce and raise awareness for family violence,” says Vinson.
