Move over, hyaluronic acid, there’s a new hydrating ingredient on the block, and it’s set to steal your crown as the go-to for skin therapists.
When used in skincare, electrolytes act as a redistribution system, helping to deliver the face all the hydration it needs. While the ingredient is mostly associated with sports drinks, it works the same in skincare. Water follows the flow of electrolytes, so when it’s infused in skin care, it allows water to be drawn into the skin. Ultimately, it hydrates faster and more effectively than a moisturiser can.
Essentially, electrolytes are minerals (potassium, magnesium and calcium) that conduct electricity when mixed with water. In turn, electricity helps the cells generate energy to regulate water levels in the body.
“Electrolytes are best for dry skin types or skin that needs more hydration since electrolytes drive more water into the skin to be absorbed, says cosmetic surgeon, Nazanin Saedi. “Electrolytes can also give skin a boost to look more buoyant, plump, and healthy.”
Paula Begoun, founder of skincare brand Paula’s Choice which has just launched the Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer, maintains that incorporating electrolytes into skin treatments creates obvious results. “Electrolytes work to balance the movement of water through layers of skin via special channels known as aquaporins.” According to Paula, calcium, potassium and magnesium are linked with skin-identical PCA (pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, part of skin’s natural moisturising factor), allowing them to work within skin’s water channels (aquaporins) to deliver vital hydrators like ceramides and glycerin. “These enhanced minerals also train skin to maintain its moisture balance, strengthen its barrier, and create a healthier, more energised appearance.”
With a recent study by Cosmetify confirming that consumers are well-educated on the ingredients available, we can expect requests for electrolyte products in our salons.
