Why Multiple Retinoids Are Better Than One

Skin therapists and their clients alike know and love vitamin A for its anti-ageing benefits.

The active ingredient is globally touted for its ability to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, create an even tone to the skin, and minimise enlarged pores. Often considered the ‘holy grail’ of anti-ageing ingredients, vitamin A takes on the form of unique retinoids each designed to work with varying skin types and textures.

Retinol is considered the most common derivative, marketed everywhere from treatment menus to retail shelves. While we know that retinol and other active ingredients can present themselves in skincare products at different percentages (where the higher the percentage, the stronger the dose typically), it’s uncommon for formulators to cocktail more than one derivative in a single SKU.

Enter Aspect and the skincare brand’s game-changing new vitamin A offerings.

Launched last month are two active-packed creams: Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus and Aspect Retinol LGS +. Each product is catered to the Retinol new-starter and the Retinol expert respectively.

What sets the brand apart from the pack is its intelligent use of multiple vitamin A derivatives, including Retinol, Retinal, and Retinyl Palmitate & phytoretinoid Lanablue™. The complex works to enhance ingredient delivery and help retexturize the skin. While similar in their ability to target pigmented, photodamaged and problematic skins, each cream is unique.

Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus is designed to target signs of ageing while also hydrating and protecting the skin’s moisture barrier. The formula is suitable for most skin types including those traditionally sensitive to retinol, or new to the active.

Advanced Skin Technology Product Innovation Lead Selina Mithen notes the use of Myristoyl Tripeptide-31 and Bakuchiol in Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus as providing a ‘mimicking’ action of retinoic acid with very minimal disruption to the skin. “These ingredients work best in more lipid rich formulations which is why Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus is so rich in skin fortifying emollients.”

“The benefit of using multiple derivatives of retinoic acid ‘mimicking’ active ingredients is that this can act on multiple pathways to address skin photoaging and provide the opportunity to minimise skin reactivity. The combination of different delivery mediums such as glycerol, liposomes, phospholipids and glycols are equally important to ensure that the active ingredients have optimal penetration. Antioxidant protection of retinoid-based ingredients is also crucial to maintain efficacy and protect them from breaking down,” Selina continues.

Selina suggests Retinoid therapy should be a multi-system approach for best results.

Aspect Retinol LGS + was developed specifically for those who are looking to bolster their current retinol usage.

“In both the Aspect Retinol LGS + and the Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus is the Retinol Liposome, which is a stabilised liposomal delivery system combined with antioxidants Vitamin E and Lipochronan™ that ensures optimal delivery and efficacy.

Both products also contain retinal, which is the immediate precursor retinoic acid. Aspect Retinol LGS + and the Aspect Dr Hydra A Plus both ensure optimal hydration of the skin with humectants such as glycerol, glycols and lactic acid so that the delivery and utilisation of retinal is enhanced. Retinyl palmitate in both products is not encapsulated within a delivery system as it acts mainly in the upper layers of the epidermis to provide antioxidant protection and improve skin texture.”

Two holy grail skincare solutions, two unique ingredient combinations.
