The alarm goes off and you feel more exhausted than when you went to sleep. Every day feels like an uphill battle to get through the smallest of things. Not to mention you feel like your hormones are all over the place, your skin is reacting to everything you are putting on it and you’ve had to drastically change your diet because of the constant bloated feeling in your stomach.
This scenario is not uncommon and certainly is something I hear in my clinic on a daily basis. You may think the answer lies in regulating hormones, reducing inflammation in your skin and improving gut health; simple right?
Unfortunately, this will only take you on a roller coaster ride that will see you feel on top of the world one day and crashing down the next. If we focus on the EFFECT and totally ignore the CAUSE then, illness will never be entirely restored.
So, what is the cause?
Simply put, Adrenal Fatigue. In this day and age, we are over-bombarded with the concepts of gut health and gut microbiome as if it is the answer to all dis-eased states in the body. The body is a complex organism and to simplify it in this way only leads to trouble down the track. In amongst gut health, we need to identify the prospect of adrenal fatigue and even leaky gut syndrome. For the purpose of this article, I will focus my energy around adrenal fatigue.
What is Adrenal Fatigue?
The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys where they regulate the secretion of hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, DHEA and many more. When the body is in a state of stress, the adrenal glands are signalled to release hormones to prepare the body for battle. It is essential for preserving life as stress means you are needing to either run or fight.
Although, these days we are less likely to meet a lion on our way to work, however the body’s stressors don’t differentiate so if the sympathetic nervous system is triggered by stress this is the natural physiological process that follows.
Now this is perfectly acceptable if it happens on occasion, but if this is occurring on a regular basis then that is where Adrenal Fatigue can arise.
Over a period of time, when the adrenals are constantly shooting off adrenalin and cortisol, the adrenals will start to fatigue. Cortisol levels start to drop so you start to feel you can’t get yourself moving as you once did. The DHEA levels start to drop which impacts hormone production so hormones start to become irregular. Other effects include poor thyroid function, food intolerances and digestive symptoms and then often an auto-immune disease spontaneously presents ‘out of the blue’.
If our focus is on the effect, then the body will never fully recover. The adrenal glands must be addressed at the same time so to help the body heal.
How do we help the adrenal glands rejuvenate?
The simple answer is; Adaptogens* . These are herbs that restore the natural physiological process in the adrenal glands to see them start working healthily as they once did.
For this reason, we at Salubre Teas have formulated Sereni-Tea with a formulation centred around rejuvenating adrenal health with Adaptogens.
