Post-lockdown demand for plastic surgery spikes

Australian cosmetic and plastic surgeons have reported a spike in enquires and bookings for cosmetic surgery, suggesting that demand has doubled since lockdown began three months ago.

According to Dr Eddy Dona, a plastic surgeon based in Sydney’s north, the demand for tummy tucks, “mummy makeovers”, liposuction and breast lifts have increased dramatically, and he believes this is due to the amount of time Australians spent reflecting on and assessing their appearance during lockdown.

“Most Australians have had more time on their hands during the pandemic. This has led people to spend more time focusing on themselves and contemplating the things that they’ve put off for so long,” Dr Dona said. “A lot of my patients have said that if they weren’t forced to stay home and do less because of the pandemic then they probably wouldn’t have had the time to research and organise surgery.”

Given that, prior to COVID-19 disrupting our day-to-day, many Australians spent their time at the office and juggling a full social calendar, the enforced isolation has led many of us to focus win ourselves – and Dr Dona believes this is what has led to the massive influx in cosmetic surgery bookings.

“The downtime has afforded people the time and opportunity to step back and reflect on the things that are most important to them. When you are constantly busy and running around, the one person that seems to receive the least attention is yourself. So, the COVID-19 downtime has allowed people to give themselves some much needed attention, and with that comes the desire for personal physical enhancements. Therefore, it’s only natural that we’re seeing more people seek out consultations for cosmetic surgery.”
