Tanning artist Stacey McPherson shares her favourite trends, tips and tanning secrets.
The media, industry and dozens of famous faces know celebrity tanning Artist Stacey McPherson as the ambassador of achieving the perfect glow. As we turn from high-summer to winter weather tans, Professional Beauty sat down with Stacey to discuss application techniques, tanning trends and how she adapts her signature style to suit the colder months.
What are the major runway trends we’re seeing with tanning right now?
Right now it’s all about tanning to look good and feel good which boosts self-esteem. Four out of five people say they feel more confident with a tan. The major runway trend is about enhancing a natural bronzed glow with supporting luminising products like shimmer creams over the tans that reflect on catwalks.
What tips should we be giving our clients in search of the perfect tan?
Go natural! A professional spray tanner will help choose the right colour for their skin tone but it’s also important they prepare their skin before the tan and look after their skin post-tan with moisturiser and tan extenders. Steer away from hot showers, sweaty gym tights or skinny jeans in the first eight hours after the tan and never spray tan over old spray tans. I advise clients to make sure their body is exfoliated, like a fresh canvas, to avoid patchiness and ensure longevity. I have secret first wash off instructions… but that’s my secret!
With winter approaching, do you change your tanning style to fit the seasons?
Winter tanning is just a natural bronzed glow. I keep it light and natural unless it’s for events, media or fashion and they have a particular style required.
How do you implement this change in style?
I choose a lighter DHA spray tan solution and recommend a supporting gradual tanning product to stretch the longevity of the tan to get two weeks before the next tan so you still feel nice, even under your winter woollies.
What equipment can you not live without?
I would be lost without my spray-tanning machine! I love my machine. Everyone comments on how fast drying it is! We don’t like sticky!
What is your first piece of advice for other tanning artists?
Know your product and skin types well. Always spray even and dry, no stickiness equals the perfect tan!
