Greater Melbourne snap COVID restrictions in effect

[UPDATE, Thursday 27 May, 2021]

The Victorian government has announced an imminent lockdown to last for seven days. The ABC is reporting that, although yet to be confirmed, the lockdown will start at midnight tonight and is anticipated to be applied to the entire state.

South Australia has imposed a hard border with Greater Melbourne.

There are now more than 78 exposure sites related to this outbreak, said to link back to virus transmission in a South Australian quarantine hotel. Official positive cases are now up to 26.

New Greater Melbourne snap restrictions are in place from 6pm TONIGHT through 12:01am Friday 4 June after several new locally acquired COVID-19 cases emerged overnight. Masks will be mandatory indoors everywhere for people over the age of 12 from 6pm TONIGHT, Tuesday 25 May 2021, gatherings in homes are limited to 5 people and public events limited to 30.

That means employees and customers must wear masks in:
– hairdressing salons
– nail salons
– beauty salons
– tanning salons
– waxing salons

“Masks are compulsory indoors but there are exemptions,” said Acting Premier James Merlino. “If you are eating and drinking, if you are at a beauty salon, you need to take your mask for treatment, there are circumstances of course where a mask is taken [off] for a period of time.”

Social distancing restrictions remain in place alongside the newly announced snap restrictions.

Updates will be posted here as they emerge and you can access more information at the Victoria Department of Health and here is the updated list of local exposure sites.
